Day One...

So many times I wish we could see into each others minds. We joke about the crystal ball, but I've never wanted one more than I do right now.

I hope you were able to get some sleep last night. I finally made it to lala land around 6 after racking my brain for hours trying to come up with a simple solution.

The more and more times that I run everything through my head, the more I realize that the only simple solution to this problem would be for you to break up with me and lie about everything that's been happening. From a love and morality standpoint, I really hope that this isn't the solution that you choose, but that's up to you.

Nothing worth having comes easily. You prove that every day when you go to school. I'm not ready to give up on us just because it's starting to get harder, and I hope that you're not either.

I know we don't talk about a lot of stuff when we're together. Personally, I think that's a great thing. I don't want to feel like we have to solve the problems of the world when we're together. I miss the days of the couch with you falling asleep with your head in my lap as I played with your hair. I love being around you and just be able to relax and cuddle with you or hold you in my arms and give you slow kisses, and to know that at that particular moment, everything's OK.

We're almost halfway through the time that we have to spend apart. I really think that if we can make it through this time, we can make it through anything. I wish you knew how hard it is not to pick up the phone...

Loving Submission

In the last 24-36 hours, we have run pretty much the entire course of human emotion. We went from missing each other because we weren't able to spend Valentine's day together, to happiness when your flowers began to bloom, and finally with you being upset and disappointed in me for making the decision to drop the letter in your parents' mailbox.

While I don't regret the decision to leave the letter and finally share my feelings with your parents, I do regret the level of emotional damage that it has done to us. After I got out of class yesterday afternoon, I literally called every rental car location in Illinois from Alton all the way down to Fairview in hopes of being able to leave right then to come see you and try to make everything better. When none of those options worked, I even got online to look at flights to Chicago. Unfortunately, the $300 price tag and a fear of getting up there and you not wanting to pick me up at the airport or see me at all kept me from finalizing the trip.

I've been thinking about whether the decision to leave the letter was a good one or not. I feel amazingly at peace about it because of the sequence of events. We've talked several times before about the fact that we don't believe in coincidence. Very rarely do I ever have text or notebooks in my bag when I'm driving. My staple items in my backpack when I'm working are my Bible, pens, flashlight, gloves, extra clothes, CD's, and some bottled water and snacks for the trip. If I had packed my flashlight in my bag, I could have stopped at any point along the side of the road to fix the problems that I was having with the truck. If I hadn't had my notebook with me that had the copy of the letter, we wouldn't be having these discussions. And of all of the places on that 450-mile route for the truck to be stupid, it happened just before exit 9 on I-72. That unique set of circumstances would not have occurred if any one of those factors had been different, but they weren't.

Ever since I wrote the first draft of this letter about a month ago, I feel that God has placed it on my heart to make the decision to send it to your parents. I really feel like He's been telling me that if I'm going to be the man I'm supposed to be in His, our families', and your eyes, I needed to step up to the plate. I needed to be able to trust in what He tells me to do in my life, and trust that He will provide for me/us in the ways that are going to benefit us most in His purpose. If we're going to succeed as a couple, we also need to know that at the most stressful times in our lives when we have to make hard decisions, that the other one will be there to support us in our decisions.

Matthew chapter 5, verses 22-33 in our Bibles says it in terms of husbands and wives, but I think this can apply to us as well:
"Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything."
"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy: cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives and their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church: for we are members of his body."
"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and the two will become one flesh. This is a profound mystery, but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself and the wife must respect her husband."

I know that we're far from the actual husband and wife stage of our relationship, but if we build that mutual respect and understanding, I think that we will be blessed. This includes us making difficult decisions when we feel like they are necessary, and sticking by each other as much as possible.

The past two years have been some of the happiest of my life. I would like to find out for sure, but I really think that even in the beginning, people may have made some incorrect assumptions about the validity of our relationship. I obviously made the biggest mistake of my life, and almost lost you right then. That's a feeling that I don't ever want to feel again. Our relationship has been far from normal for the last two years, but it's been a time of significant growth. The biggest thing that I have lacking in my life right now is the ability to have a normal and open relationship with you.

Right now it might seem to you like an inconsiderate and selfish decision was made for all the wrong reasons. Hopefully by the end of this week, things will be different. Only time will tell how this will actually work out, but I very firmly believe that there are no such things as coincidences.

1-31-2011

It's the day after one of the best weekends of my life.
Spending time with you without having to rush around was amazing. All my reservations about our relationship fade to nothing when I'm with you. This weekend when we were laying in bed and you were sleeping, I wasn't thinking about your parents, our different churches, or anything else that we've talked about. Al I lay there and watched you sleep and ran my fingers through your hair, all I could think about was that there was nowhere in the world I would have rather been in that moment. And the best thing about that in my mind is that I feel that way EVERY night that I'm with you.
I know that we have certain things that we need to work out, but we have time to do so. I know that you sometimes feel like we need to fix them right now so we don't waste any more of our time. I understand the though behind that statement. I'm just wondering at what point does the shift happen from where we cut our losses and move on, to viewing our relationship as something that we've put in a lot of work into, and we need to try and save.
I feel like I'm 100% sure about what I want for our future together. Since neither of us have a crystal ball, we can't know for sure, but I really think that how we handle things now could be a huge indicator of our potential for success in a marriage. The obstacles that we are facing now are going to be as difficult as anything we'll face when we're married.
I feel like this is almost a pre-marriage test for us from God. We both agree that there's no such thing as coincidence. I think this is a situation that will require us to work together and have faith in Him, and He will bless our obedience and our future together.
I do know that I love you and I'm willing to do what it takes to make and keep you happy for the rest of my life.
This is my love letter to you, and it changes every day!

Almost There! 1-26-2011

I can't wait to see you! I was just thinking last night about a lot of the things that we used to do together that I miss.

I miss Quizno's with you. I miss playing "the pizza game" together. I miss ice cream runs. I miss my Diet Coke IV. I miss the third floor of the library before finals. I miss cooking dinners. I miss going to movies and your perfectly buttered popcorn. I miss joining in and following you around like a puppy on extended retail therapy sessions...kinda, Lol. I miss drives through the country at night with the windows down and the radio up. I miss laying in the middle of the 18th fairway at Fox Creek and staring up at the sky with you. More than anything though, I miss just being able to spend time with you while we do nothing at all.

I think what I'm trying to say is...I MISS YOU!

Can't wait to see you! Only 2 more nights until I get to fall asleep with you in my arms.

This is my love letter to you, and it changes every day.

Love You Baby

5 days...

Hi Baby!

It's only 5 days away from the next time I get to see you! I'm really excited, but also kind of nervous about this weekend. Although it's been a hard last month or so, I'm super-excited that we're actually working toward a resolution. One of the things that going to have to happen is our honesty with each other. When I ask what you're thinking at any time, it's because I really want to know. If I do something that you don't like, or there's something that you're worried about, I want to know. Especially with my past transgression, I don't want you to ever think that you're being overbearing or controlling. To be completely honest with you, I like it when you ask me questions about where I am and what I'm doing. Asking questions like that doesn't make me think you don't trust me, it shows me that you care.

I want you to know that I trust you completely. I know that sometimes when I ask where you are and who you're with, it might seem like I don't. I think more than anything, I just feel like those are questions we should be able to ask each other as partners in a relationship. I know that you would never do anything that would be disrespectful to our relationship. I'm really working not to let my mind wander to places it shouldn't when it comes to that too. I know that you've never given me any reason not to trust you. I wish it was as simple as an ON/OFF switch to get that idea into where it needs to be. I think I'm getting better at this, but I want you to know that I'm trying.

One other thing that's been bothering me more lately is when you talk about your weight. When I say that I love you no matter what, I mean it. If you want to lose weight for health reasons, or because it will make you happy, that's fine. I think that most of the time when you say it, you're kidding, but please don't ever do it because you think it's going to make you more beautiful in my eyes. That really can't happen any more that it already has. You're the most beautiful woman in the world to me...pinky swear :-)

This is my love letter to you, and it changes every day. See you soon!

The Beginning...1-19-2011

Dear Abby-
If there's one thing I want you to know for sure, it's that I LOVE YOU! Not the high school kind of love where I want to spend every minute of our lives together and sacrifice our individuality. Not the lustful kind of love that makes me want to tear your clothes off and make love to you every time I see you. The kind of love I have for you is the kind that's ever-changing. The kind of love I'm talking about is an ever-growing, ever-deepening kind of love that makes me want to put your needs and wants before my own. The kind of love that makes me want to serve you and make you realize how beautiful and special you are to me every day. The kind of love I have for you makes me excited about the possibility of our future together and the prospect of raising a family and growing old together.
I know that there are lots of things in our lives both together and individually that are not perfect. The reality of life is that nothing is or ever will be perfect on the face of this Earth.
What I do know, is that if we put our faith in God and trust Him, that He will guide our way. If we strive to love each other the way that God loves us, we will surely fall short, but will continue to grow.

This is my love letter to you, and it's changing every day...
